Extremely heavy rainfall likely in coming hours; IMD issues red alert for more districts

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A red alert was issued for more districts in Kerala as rain continues to wreak havoc across the state. In addition to Idukki, Thrissur, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts, a red alert was issued for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts. All districts are either on red or orange alert today.

A red alert has been issued for some districts considering the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall. The Meteorological Department defines extremely heavy rain as rain of more than 204.4 mm in 24 hours.

Orange Alert

01/08/2026: IMD issued an orange alert for the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam and Palakkad. There is a possibility of very heavy rainfall at isolated places.

Alert on rivers

Following the dangerous rise in water levels, the State Irrigation Department issued orange and yellow alerts for the following rivers. People living on the banks of these rivers are advised to be cautious.

Orange Alert

Ernakulam: Muvattupuzha (Thodupuzha Station)

Kollam: Kallada (Punalur Station)

Kottayam: Meenachil (Pala Station), Manimala (Manimala Station)

Pathanamthitta: Pamba (Kurudamannil Station), Achankovil (Kalleli Station)

Yellow Alert

Ernakulam: Muvattupuzha (Kakkadassery Station)

The authorities warn that under no circumstances should anyone enter or cross the aforementioned rivers. Those living near the banks are also advised to be cautious.
