Water level recedes in Ranni; Heavy rain causes damages worth crores

PATHANAMTHITTA: Traders are in distress as the water level in the Pampa River rose and submerged the city of Ranni in the heavy rains that lashed on Saturday. Ranni received 339 mm of rain in 24 hours. Ranni city went through a situation similar to the 2018 floods. Although the water level receded Sunday morning, traders suffered huge losses.

Majority of the shops had stored a large amount of goods since it was Onam season. The traders said that they did not have the time to move their goods to a safe place due to the unexpected flood following the heavy rains. The lottery traders in the area suffered losses of over Rs 4 lakh. Lottery tickets including Onam bumpers were washed away in the water. Since Saturday was market day, more goods were imported by shops in the area. All these things have been washed away in the water.

Ranni MLA Pazhakulam Madhu responded by saying that the district administration has been asked to take stock of the damages caused to traders and ensure proportionate compensation.
