THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A dead leech was found in a food packet purchased from the Cantonment Police Canteen near Statue. Following the incident, the Corporation conducted an inspection and ordered the canteen to be shut down.

The incident came to light on Tuesday afternoon when police personnel found a dead leech in a parcel of fish fry they had bought from the canteen. Soon after, a special inspection team from the Corporation inspected the premises and found that the canteen was operating under unhygienic conditions. The canteen has reportedly faced several complaints in the past regarding hygiene and food quality. Police personnel attached to the Cantonment Police Station mainly rely on this canteen for their daily meals.

The canteen was being run by an outside contractor. Following the incident, Corporation officials directed the contractor to appear before them to explain the matter.
