
GUNDUR: Doctors have successfully removed a brain tumor while the patient was still awake. The surgery was performed at a private hospital at Gundur in Andhra Pradesh. The claim is that the surgery was performed while the woman was watching actor and deputy chief minister Pawan Kalyan's film 'They call him OG'. The surgery was performed on Koteswaramma from Prakasam district.
The surgery was performed without putting the patient under full general anesthesia. The film was played to her make her calm and cooperative during the surgery. When she was subjected to detailed scans, it was found that the tumor was located near to the areas of the brain that control speech and movement. The doctors decided that the safest way to perform the brain surgery was to make her awake.
The surgery was performed by a team of neurosurgeons Dr Arun Kumar, Dr Rajasekhar, anesthetists, nurses and technicians. Since the patient was not fully anesthetized, she was conscious during the surgery. This helped to monitor speech, memory and movement. This helped in removing the tumor more safely, said Dr Arun Kumar.
'During the surgery, the patient was able to respond to questions, speak with the medical team and watch the film. Watching the film helped reduce her anxiety and kept her engaged throughout the surgery. It also helped keep the patient active during the surgery. The patient is a big fan of Pawan Kalyan. The patient cooperated with the surgery while watching OG. This helped us to monitor the patient's activity in real time during the surgery, said Arun Kumar. Hospital authorities said the surgery was a great success. The tumor was removed without complications. They added that the patient is recovering well.
