AMARAVATI: A catastrophic explosion at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant in Andhra Pradesh has claimed the lives of at least eight workers and left several others critically injured.
The incident occurred during evening operations when a ladle carrying molten metal ruptured in the plant's Steel Melting Shop (SMS) 1 and SMS 2 units. The breach caused liquid iron, heated to a volatile 1600 degrees Celsius, to spill directly onto nearby personnel.
According to initial reports, approximately 12 workers sustained severe burn injuries. Emergency response teams rushed the victims to nearby hospitals, where medical staff confirmed that multiple individuals remain in critical condition.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep condolences over the tragedy and directed state officials to coordinate across departments to ensure the highest standard of emergency medical treatment for the injured.
An investigation into the technical failure that led to the ladle rupture is expected to commence as rescue and containment operations conclude at the site.
