NEW DELHI: The CPM Central Committee blamed the dearth of leaders having a real connection with people for the humiliating defeat of the party in the assembly elections. The Central Committee, which met in Delhi, also directed the state unit to take strict action to resolve the organisational shortcomings and to review the election defeat. A draft for this will be prepared at the state secretariat and committee meeting early next month.

Central committee:

Only a few in the leadership have worked directly with the people. Those who have come directly from class-based organisations to higher committees have been unable to understand grassroots-level activities. The style and language of former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and State Secretary M.V. Govindan also reduced the public's impression of the party. But the reason for the failure cannot be pinned on Pinarayi Vijayan.

Targeting the media also backfired in the elections. The media should not have been provoked. There is a situation of minorities distancing themselves from the party. Reports from the grassroots should be discussed in detail, and solutions should be suggested to strengthen the organisation.

General Secretary M.A. Baby will explain the details related to the three-day meeting at a press conference today.
