THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Weather systems over the southern peninsula are set to trigger widespread heavy rainfall across Kerala over the next few days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued localized alerts across various districts, warning residents and local administrators to prepare for severe weather conditions.
The northern district of Kannur has been placed under an Orange Alert following forecasts of isolated, very heavy downpours. According to the IMD classification, this implies a high probability of rainfall measurements ranging between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm within a 24-hour window. Local authorities are expected to monitor low-lying and landslide-prone areas closely.
Several other regions are also on alert, with Yellow Alerts currently active for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Kasaragod. These districts are anticipated to experience isolated heavy rainfall, potentially accumulating between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours. The weather office has specifically warned that the precipitation will likely be accompanied by frequent thunderstorms and lightning, urging the public to exercise caution during the peak hours of the storm.
The sudden surge in activity is attributed to multiple atmospheric disturbances interacting simultaneously over neighbouring regions. Meteorologists have tracked a cyclonic circulation, previously situated over the north Tamil Nadu coast, which has now moved directly over northern coastal Tamil Nadu.
Concurrently, a low-pressure trough connected to this circulation has formed near the 11-degree North latitude line. Another active cyclonic circulation hovering over the south coastal Andhra Pradesh and its adjacent territories further intensifies this weather pattern. Under the combined influence of these systems, the state is projected to witness sustained wet spells until at least June 14.
