THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that rain will intensify in Kerala over the next five days. A red alert has been issued due to the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall in the state. Tomorrow (09/06/2026), a red alert is in place for Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts.
These three districts are likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall. According to the IMD, an "extremely heavy rainfall" event refers to rainfall exceeding 204.4 mm within 24 hours. A cyclonic circulation formed over the central-eastern Arabian Sea near the Konkan coast is the reason for the strengthening of the rain.
Orange alert
The IMD has issued an orange alert for the following districts:
An orange alert indicates the possibility of very heavy rainfall, with precipitation ranging between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm within a 24-hour period.
Yellow alert
The IMD has also issued a Yellow Alert for the following districts:
A yellow alert indicates the possibility of heavy rainfall, with expected precipitation between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also likely in several areas.
The IMD has warned that extremely heavy rainfall could lead to hazardous conditions across the state. Heavy rain over short periods may trigger flash floods, rapid runoff from hilly areas, and waterlogging in urban and low-lying regions. With rainfall expected to continue over the coming days, there is also a risk of landslides and mudslides, particularly in vulnerable areas. The weather department has advised both the public and government agencies to remain on high alert and take necessary precautions.
