THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala assembly's security wing, Watch and Ward, will be replaced en masse. Officials, including the Chief Marshal, who assumed office during the Left government, will be replaced. The Watch and Ward officials are appointed by the police. The change in Watch and Ward is based on the recommendation of pro-government leaders in police organisations. Those in technical sections, including the bomb squad, will not be replaced.

When the House met for the oath-taking of the MLAs on Thursday, new watch and ward officers were present in most places. During the UDF 's time in opposition, clashes with the watch and ward officers were common in the House. The watch and ward officers have torn down banners raised by UDF members. Sometimes, leaders engaged in scuffles with the watch and ward officers. Those removed were assigned to various units of the police.

Those who have completed three years of service from the Armed Police Force and AR camps will be appointed on deputation as Watch and Ward. They are also responsible for providing security to the Speaker and Deputy Speaker in the Assembly premises.

The Chief Marshal will be an officer of the rank of SP/Commandant. 100 people will be appointed, including the Chief Marshal. During training, they are taught not to hurt the MLAs in any manner. The practice is to stand with their hands tied behind their backs.
