THRISSUR: Union AYUSH Minister Sarbananda Sonowal gave possible hints about considering a National Institute of Ayurveda in Kerala. The Union Ministry of AYUSH is ready to implement the same if the State Government submits the proposal, said the minister. Sonowal's response came to Dr V. Sivadasan MP’s question in the Rajya Sabha.

The Government Ayurveda Medical College to be started in Idukki can be upgraded to the National Institute of Ayurveda. That will lead to more grants. Rs 100 crore central fund is expected to be received. Idukki, rich in biodiversity, can be turned into an eco-tourism centre and research centre. There will also be no dearth of Foreign funds.

Kerala spends huge on Ayurveda development than any other state in India. The existing NIA in Goa is a branch of Delhi NIA. Kerala Kaumudi had reported about Kerala not submitting the plan for the National Institute of Ayurveda. AYUSH department in Kerala is managed by the state health department. Due to concerns occurring across other fields of medicine, the health department has not been able to monitor the AYUSH department in the state.

If there is an AYUSH minister with independent charge in the state to coordinate the work of Ayurveda, new schemes in the Ayurveda sector will boom in Kerala.

  • Registered Medical Practitioners: 20,000
  • Govt Ayurveda Dispensaries: 815
  • In Private Sector: 2000
  • Govt Ayurveda College: 3

  • In Private Sector: 15
  • World Class Resorts: 30

Research Institutes of Central AYUSH Department: 2 (Cheruthurthi, Thiruvananthapuram)
