THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The transport department has extended the registration period of thousands of expired KSRTC buses by two years. Buses that have completed 15 years have been extended. The new order was issued after the chairman of KSRTC requested the government.

The chairman informed that the inability to operate 1270 vehicles (1117 buses and 153 non-buses) on the road after 15 years of service will be a major crisis and the need to withdraw so many vehicles from the public road will seriously affect the operations of KSRTC. Considering the fact that the financial assistance for purchasing new vehicles to replace the deregistered vehicles has not yet been received and the government has extended the tenure of private buses to 22 years, the chairman demanded that the tenure of KSRTC vehicles be extended till September 30, 2026. With this, the transport department brought the new decision into effect.
