VATICAN CITY: Pope Leo XIV made his first public appearance since undergoing lung cancer surgery on Sunday, addressing pilgrims from a window of the Apostolic Palace overlooking St Peter’s Square.
The 71-year-old pontiff waved to the crowds and led the weekly Angelus prayer, thanking people around the world for their prayers during his recovery. He said he would gradually resume his activities with the help of God and the faithful’s continued prayers.
The Pope underwent surgery at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on October 13. Surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung after a tumour was detected. An examination of the tissue during the operation confirmed lung adenocarcinoma, a common form of lung cancer.
The Vatican reported that the operation was successful and that there were no complications. The Pope was discharged from hospital on October 17 after doctors determined that his clinical condition allowed him to return to the Vatican.
His surgeon, Professor Stefano Margaritora, subsequently described his clinical condition at discharge as satisfactory. Further assessment of the removed tissue will help determine whether additional treatment is required.
Although the Pope’s recovery has progressed well enough for him to leave hospital, his return to a full schedule is expected to be gradual. The Vatican has cancelled some public engagements during his recovery, while his planned November visit to South America remains under consideration.
