Two new lakes form along China border after Nepal flash floods; flood warning issued, Uttarakhand on alert

KATHMANDU: Concerns over further flooding have grown after two new lakes formed along the Nepal-China border following the flash floods in Nepal. Rescue operations in the affected areas were suspended for nearly three hours as a precaution. Although the operations later resumed, authorities remain on alert.

The new lakes were formed after rocks, snow, mud and debris carried by the floods accumulated in the area. As water began flowing out of the newly formed lakes, authorities in both countries issued flood warnings.

Meanwhile, rescue operations in Nepal continue to face major challenges due to damaged roads, disrupted communication networks and the risk of further flooding.

Uttarakhand on alert

Areas around 13 glacial lakes in Uttarakhand have been placed on high alert. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed officials to closely monitor the condition of the lakes and remain vigilant.
