TEHRAN: Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has warned the Iranian people against expecting any change in US policy towards Iran following President Donald Trump's setback in the US midterm elections. Khamenei said the election results were unlikely to change Washington's approach towards Tehran. He also warned that another US attack on Iran would significantly widen the ongoing war in West Asia.
The Democrats have regained control of both the US House of Representatives and the Senate following the midterm elections. The results were seen as a major setback for Trump and a rejection of his administration's policies. However, Khamenei urged the Iranian people not to interpret the political shift in Washington as a sign of changing US policy towards Iran. He said those expecting a change in American hostility following the election results were seriously mistaken.
Khamenei also warned that the scope of the war would become much wider if the United States renewed its attacks on Iran. Meanwhile, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf welcomed the anti-war sentiment expressed by American voters, saying Washington should respect public opinion.
Trump, meanwhile, said he accepted the election results and was willing to work with the Democrats. However, he rejected the suggestion that the Republican Party's defeat represented a personal setback for him, attributing the party's poor performance to its candidates.
