CARACAS: The death toll from twin earthquakes in Venezuela has risen to 589, according to news agencies citing various organisations. More than 3,000 people have been injured, while over 50,000 are reported missing. Officials have warned that the number of fatalities could increase further.
It remains unclear how many people are still trapped under the debris of collapsed buildings as rescue operations continue at a rapid pace, Acting President Delcy Rodríguez said. Many survivors have been pulled from rubble in the worst-hit areas of Caracas and La Guaira state.
The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening local time.

The Indian Air Force has dispatched two aircraft carrying emergency humanitarian aid, including medicines, medical equipment, and relief supplies. A 41-member specialised medical and rescue team is also part of the mission, along with equipment to set up a field hospital in the affected areas.
Meanwhile, the United States has announced a temporary easing of economic sanctions on Venezuela. Elon Musk’s Starlink has also offered free satellite internet services for one month. Medical teams and rescue workers from several countries have reached Venezuela to support ongoing relief and rescue operations.
