Allegation of sexually abusing girl: Students vandalize university, set vehicles on fire

CHANDIGARH: A major clash broke out at a private university in Punjab following social media posts alleging that a female student had been sexually abused. The violence began in the early hours of Sunday at the Lovely Professional University. Students set fire to several vehicles parked inside the campus and vandalised various parts of the university.

Social media posts have been circulating for the past two days alleging that a girl residing in the campus hostel was sexually assaulted. The students resorted to violence, alleging that the university had failed to conduct a proper investigation despite the circulation of the reports.

After vandalising campus property, the students took to the Bhagwara-Jalandhar National Highway, disrupting traffic for several hours. Police and university officials later arrived and managed to calm the students. The police assured the students that an investigation would be conducted into the incident.

However, the university stated that no investigation had been initiated because no official complaint had been received on the matter. The authorities also warned students against falling for false information circulating on social media.
