Centre plans major changes in NEET-UG with two-stage exam pattern like JEE

NEW DELHI: The central government is considering major changes in the NEET-UG examination for medical courses. The central government has informed the Supreme Court that the authorities are considering conducting NEET-UG in two stages on the pattern of JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) for engineering courses. The centre informed the court through an affidavit while hearing petitions seeking changes to the National Testing Agency's (NTA) examination procedures to prevent question paper leaks.

A migration of the NEET-UG exam from pen and paper mode to Computer Based Testing (CBT) is being considered. The affidavit said they are presently considering to conduct the exam in a single phase or a two-stage exam on the pattern of JEE model. The government said a final decision on this will be taken after the report of the high-level committee.

The high-level committee comprises experts from fields such as technology, space, intelligence, education and public administration. The government has also clarified that the committee is comprehensively examining the security, technical aspects of the exam, fairness for all and infrastructure. The Centre pointed that seven out of the eight major exams conducted by the NTA have now been converted to computer-based exams with a multi-session, multi-day schedule.
