Pulkit Mani's Modi act leaves Rahul Gandhi laughing, BJP fuming

NEW DELHI: A political controversy has erupted over a mimicry performance at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's 'Chhatron Ki Goonj' programme in Indore, during which comedian Pulkit Mani imitated Prime Minister Narendra Modi's mannerisms and speaking style. The performance took place on Saturday during the student-focused programme. Rahul Gandhi was on stage during the act and was seen laughing at parts of the performance, videos of which were later shared on social media.

The BJP strongly criticised Rahul Gandhi and the Congress over the episode. BJP leaders also objected to a reference in the performance involving an elderly woman, alleging that it mocked Prime Minister Narendra Modi's late mother.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju criticised the Congress over the episode and described the party as a "Party of Comedians & Jokers". He also questioned the use of a student interaction programme for such a performance.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi also criticised Rahul Gandhi and the Congress, alleging that a programme meant for interacting with students had been used to mock and insult the Prime Minister's late mother.
BJP spokesperson C.R. Kesavan accused Rahul Gandhi of endorsing what he described as an "uncouth culture" after the comedian's performance. He also criticised the reference involving an elderly woman.

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi used the programme to discuss issues concerning students and young people, including education, employment and examination-related concerns. Rahul Gandhi also criticised the Central government and alleged that the system was afraid of students who asked questions and demanded accountability.
