CHENNAI: Veteran Tamil actress Sowcar Janaki (94) passed away Friday afternoon while undergoing treatment for old age ailments. The death was confirmed by Nadigar Sangham president Nassar. Sowcar Janaki was admitted to Kauvery Hospital in Alwarpet, Chennai following illness. She passed away while undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit after her health deteriorated.
The actress was admitted to the hospital on August 19. The Nadikar Sangham informed that her body will be kept for public homage at Centaf Road in Thenampet, Chennai from 5 pm onwards.
In her acting career spanning over seven decades, Sowcar Janaki has played notable roles in Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi languages besides Tamil. She has acted in around 400 films and has been active in many plays and stages. She won much appreciation from the audience for playing Mammootty's mother in the film Suryamanasam. The central government had honored her with the Padma Shri for her comprehensive contribution to Indian cinema in 2022.
