Fridge that exploded

THRISSUR: A bedridden couple sustained injuries after the fridge at their home in Guruvayur exploded. The couple has been identified as Kuttappan (70) and Ambika (65). The couple was admitted to the hospital with severe breathing issues after inhaling the smoke.

The incident happened Wednesday at 11.30 pm. Both of them woke up when smoke filled the entire house following the explosion. The couple sought the help of the locals as they did not know what has happened. They immediately brought the two out of the house. The locals who came for the rescue operations saw the explosion of the fridge.

Short circuit is suspected to be the cause of the explosion. The house has suffered some damages in the explosion. An investigation has started to find the cause of the explosion.

Multiple causes behind explosion

A short circuit can cause a fridge to explode. However, there are other reasons that can also cause an explosion. The compressor at the back of the fridge is often the main cause of an explosion. The gases it contains are highly inflammable. If the gas leaks from the compressor and a small spark occurs from the plug or from somewhere else, it can cause a major explosion.

Excessive dust on the coils behind the fridge and running it again without allowing it to cool down properly after it has become excessively hot also increases the risk of an explosion.
