THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rain across Kerala for the next five days, with yellow alerts issued in several districts. A yellow alert has been issued for Kottayam, Ernakulam, Kannur and Kasaragod on Tuesday, August 18. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected in these districts. Heavy rainfall refers to precipitation between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours. The latest rain warning comes as Onam celebrations are underway across the state.

Meanwhile, there is no restriction on fishing along the Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshadweep coasts on Monday, August 17. The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has warned of possible sea erosion along the Kerala coast due to the Kallakkadal phenomenon. High waves ranging from 0.9 to 1.5 metres are expected until 11.30 pm on Tuesday, August 18.

Fisherman and coastal residents advised to remain cautious

Fishermen and coastal residents have been advised to remain cautious. Authorities have issued the following safety guidelines:

  • People living in vulnerable coastal areas should move to safer locations if instructed by authorities.
  • Small boats and vessels should not be launched into the sea during rough conditions.
  • Fishing vessels should avoid both entering the sea and returning to shore when waves are strong, as both can be dangerous.
  • All activities at beaches, including tourism-related activities, should be completely avoided until the INCOIS warning is withdrawn.
  • Fishing boats and other vessels should be securely anchored at harbours, with sufficient distance maintained between them to prevent collisions.
  • Fishing equipment should be kept secure.
  • People should avoid visiting beaches and taking part in sea-based recreational activities.
  • Coastal residents should remain especially alert due to the possibility of coastal erosion.
