LDF unity intact: Binoy Viswam dismisses speculation of rift between CPI and CPM

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Amid intensifying friction between the two major constituents of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) over the post of Deputy Leader of the Opposition, CPI State Secretary Binoy Viswam has clarified his party’s stance, dismissing speculation of a rift with the CPM.

Speaking on Kaumudy TV’s Straight Line program, Binoy Viswam expressed strong confidence that the CPI would secure the Deputy Opposition Leader position. He noted that the demand was initially raised during bilateral discussions with the CPM, where leadership from the senior partner suggested the matter be resolved through mutual talks rather than being brought up before the wider LDF coalition.

Despite asserting the party's claim, the CPI state secretary emphasised that they are not being rigid about the post. He remarked that the mere prestige of a position has never been a driving factor for the CPI, reminding that the party's history includes instances of walking away from the Chief Minister's post with ease. History is dynamic, Binoy Viswam noted, adding that precedents and traditional stances must be adapted if political unity demands flexibility. He firmly rejected any possibility of the CPI and CPM parting ways over the issue.

Reflecting on the coalition’s performance in the recent Assembly elections, Binoy Viswam admitted to feeling deeply saddened by the defeat. While the initial shock has faded, the disappointment remains. He stressed the critical need for introspection, warning that a Communist party failing to learn from its mistakes and self-correct would face inevitable decline. The CPM, he concluded, cannot afford to face such a downfall.
