Climbing coconut trees funded his PSC dream: Kannur native Mubasheer makes it to 12 rank lists

KANNUR: For 29-year-old Mubasheer, a B.Com graduate from Chalode near Mattannur in Kannur, climbing coconut trees became the stepping stone to success in life. Facing severe financial hardship, Mubasheer tried several jobs, including working at brick kilns, but struggled to make ends meet. He then decided to take up coconut tree climbing as a profession. He learned the technique of climbing trees using a mechanical device by watching YouTube videos.

Mubasheer says he used to tremble with fear even at moderate heights. But once he overcame that fear, he realised that determination could help him overcome any challenge.

He earned up to Rs 2,000 a day by climbing coconut trees and used part of his income to prepare for PSC examinations. His hard work has paid off, with his name now appearing in 12 PSC rank lists. He is currently working as an LD Clerk at Sreekandapuram Municipality. He has also secured ranks for several other posts, including Fire and Rescue Services, KSFE, Armed Police Sub-Inspector, University Assistant and Secretariat Assistant.

Mubasheer completed his schooling at Pulpally, the native place of his mother, Rasiya, before moving to Chalode, his father Ismail's hometown. His father used to run a small business in Bengaluru, while his brother Mashood works as a daily wage labourer.

Dreams of becoming a Secretariat Assistant

Despite his achievements, Mubasheer says his ultimate goal is to become a Secretariat Assistant. He revealed that he has watched only one film in the past two years, spending almost all his free time reading and preparing for PSC examinations.

After long days of climbing coconut trees, he would return home exhausted. Whenever he opened his books, he often felt sleepy. At such moments, he would imagine receiving his appointment order, a dream that gave him the motivation to continue studying. That determination eventually helped him secure places in multiple rank lists. If he is appointed as a Secretariat Assistant, he says he would gladly take up the post.
