THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The electrifying showdown ‘Kalashakottu’ took place in the state amidst blaring slogans and a myriad of party flags and banners. The heat of the excitement invited violence in six constituencies while rain made a fortuitous entry in some places.
In most constituencies, the showdown ended on the brink of a scuffle between opposing parties. In Kollam, Karunagappally, the event reached its crescendo when a fight broke out between LDF and UDF supports which later resorted to stone pelting. CR Mahesh MLA was injured in the ruckus while four policemen, including the CI, and CPM state committee member Susan Kodi were injured.
In Neyyattinkara, LDF and BJP workers came face to face while in Pathanapuram, it was LDF-UDF melee. Clashes also took place in Malappuram, Mavelikara, Chengannur and Thodupuzha.
Anticipating such violence, police had earlier designated special teams in selected constituencies to abate any such issues. The electrifying celebrations and the fervour seen in these LS polls were unmatched and unprecedented in Kerala.
Hundreds of young men and women took part in the road show on two-wheelers. By noon, most of the city roads were crammed with party supporters, while balloons posters and flags brought the campaigning to adorn a festive vibe. Most candidates opted for cranes and JCBs to bring more spotlight thus making the event more grandiose.
