LUCKNOW: Acharya Satyendra Das (85), the chief priest of the Ayodhya Ram Janmabhoomi Temple, passed away Wednesday morning. He died while undergoing treatment at the Sanjay Gandhi PG Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital in Lucknow. He was admitted to the hospital on February 3 following brain stroke. The funeral will be held on Thursday on the banks of the Sarayu River in Ayodhya, officials said.
Acharya Satyendra Das took charge as the chief priest of Ayodhya on March 6 in 1992. After the demolition of the Babri Masjid in December of the same year, the then Ram Lalla idol was shifted to a tent. Later, the Ram Lalla idol was shifted from the tent on March 25, 2020. Acharya Satyendra Das had performed puja inside the tent for 28 years.
