Woman drowns while trying to save son from flash floods in Souparnika river

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A woman has died while trying to save her son from drowning in the flash floods in Souparnika river, near Kollur Mookambika temple. The deceased have been identified as Vilappilsala native Chandini Shekhar (Sandhya, 41). The incident happened on Saturday. Chandini's body was found in the forest near Souparnika river on Sunday evening.

Sandhya entered the river along with her husband Murugan to save their son Adithyan who was swept away. The father and son escaped by clinging to the rocks. Even though Chandini knew swimming, she drowned in the strong current. During the rainy season, flash floods occur in Souparnika river. There was a rope tied in the area to mark danger. The accident happened when Adithyan went to bath in river without noticing the rope.

Along with a group of 15 relatives, Chandini and her family left for temple visit on Thiruvonam day. They reached Mookambika on Saturday. Although their relative Vikraman tried to save them, he hit his head on a rock and got injured. The tragedy happened when they were about to return on Monday evening. Chandini and her husband Murugan is running a stitching centre in Peyad.
