ATLANTA: Argentina staged a dramatic comeback from two goals down to defeat Egypt 3-2 in the Round of 16 on Tuesday, overcoming an earlier penalty miss by Lionel Messi to book their place in the quarterfinals.

Egypt took the lead in the 15th minute through Yasser Ibrahim and doubled their advantage in the 67th minute when Mostafa Ziko found the net, leaving the world champions staring at elimination.

Cristian Romero sparked Argentina's fightback with a header in the 79th minute before Messi redeemed himself by scoring the equaliser four minutes later after missing a penalty earlier in the match.

With extra time looming, Enzo Fernández struck deep into stoppage time to complete a remarkable turnaround and seal Argentina's place in the last eight.
