Nepal disaster: Death toll crosses 900, over 4,200 missing; hundreds of workers feared trapped

KATHMANDU: The death toll from the flash floods and landslides in Nepal has risen to 903, while 4,247 people are still missing, according to the Disaster Management Authority. Rescue operations have entered the sixth day, with search efforts continuing in several areas. There is still no information about the Malayalis reported missing from the disaster. The US has also said that 85 of its citizens are missing.

As many as 933 workers at hydropower projects in Nepal are feared to be trapped following the flash floods. Rescue teams are making intense efforts to reach those trapped inside tunnels at various project sites, including the Trishuli 3A project.

Expert teams from India and China are also helping Nepal's rescue teams with the operations. However, authorities have not yet been able to establish contact with those believed to be trapped inside the tunnels.

More than half of those reported missing are believed to be employees and workers at hydropower projects across the country.

The floods have also caused widespread destruction in Tibet. Sixteen people have died and 546 are reported missing there. Difficult terrain and bad weather are making rescue operations even more challenging.
