ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has issued a public threat against India. The threat comes after India clarified that its decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty will remain unchanged. Khawaja Asif made the threat during an interview with ARY News.
‘The moment we feel that our country's security and its water security are under threat, we will go to war against India. There is no doubt about it. If we get evidence that India is moving with extraordinary speed to disrupt water supply, we will consider military action,' said Asif.
India decided to temporarily suspend the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty following the Pahalgam terrorist attack in April 2025 that killed 26 people. India is of the view that the treaty will not be restored until Pakistan takes credible and strong steps against cross-border terrorism.
Pakistan is allowed to use 80 percent of the Indus River water for agricultural purposes under a World Bank-brokered agreement. However, experts have pointed that the current water shortage is due to the Pakistani government's gross failure in managing resources. They said Pakistan’s defense minister is trying to cover up domestic failures.
