Actor Devan quits BJP; announces resignation during temple event

ALAPPUZHA: Actor turned politician Devan announced his resignation from the BJP. He was serving as the vice president of the party. He announced his resignation during a programme organised at the Kanichukulangara Temple.

‘My politics is visions of Sree Narayana Guru. I am not able to execute this. I am resigning from the state vice president’s post and the primary membership of the party. There were some issues during the last assembly elections. I am not going into it now,’ said the actor. He said that he had taken the decision much earlier.

Devan, who formed and began operating his own party called the New Kerala People’s Party, later joined the BJP along with his party. He had previously contested two elections but lost both.

He had announced to contest the assembly polls in 2021 alone. His party merged with the BJP on the last day of K Surendran’s Vijay Yatra. Union Home Minister Amit Shah formally welcomed Devan and his party into the BJP. On that occasion, Devan said that the Nava Kerala People’s Party was like his daughter, which he had nurtured for 17 years.

Devan had then said that he had bid farewell to his parent party, the Congress, after trying to understand why Kerala remained underdeveloped. He subsequently founded the Kerala People’s Party in 2004. He said that it was after his meeting with Amit Shah, he decided to merge his party with the BJP.
