KOCHI: Veteran actor Mallika Sukumaran has resigned from the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), expressing support for actor Shweta Menon amid the ongoing controversy within the organization.
Announcing her decision via a Facebook post, she said, ‘Stepping down with affection from AMMA. Standing with truth, justice, and Shweta.’ She alleged that despite having a golden opportunity to move forward, the organization chose gossip over growth.
Speaking to the media, Mallika said there was a conspiracy to oust Shweta Menon and alleged that actor Maala Parvathy played a key role in it. She said efforts to bring a no-confidence motion against the leadership had begun about 15 days earlier, along with a signature campaign. This was informed by Maala Parvathy herself. She said that she called at the request of Siddique and Renji Panicker. The resignation is not for producing the accounts.
Mallika further alleged that during an AMMA meeting, actor Baburaj raised serious allegations against Shweta Menon including claims related to political activities. He alleged that Shweta’s job is to provide candidates to BJP. Soon, Shweta announced her resignation. Members who spoke in support of Shweta were denied the microphone, and they also snatched the mike from my hands. The seniors should immediately intervene in the issue,’ she requested.
The governing body of AMMA resigned the other day. All 17 members of the body headed by Shweta Menon stepped down despite having two years remaining in their term.
