THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rainfall in Kerala over the next five days and issued yellow alerts in several districts. A yellow alert has been issued for Idukki and Ernakulam districts on November 6 (Friday). On November 7 (Saturday), the alert will be in effect in Pathanamthitta and Kottayam districts. On November 8 (Sunday), Alappuzha, Kottayam and Ernakulam districts will be under a yellow alert.

Isolated heavy rainfall is likely, the IMD said. Heavy rainfall refers to precipitation ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within 24 hours.

Moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is also likely at isolated places.

Safety Guidelines

Lightning is dangerous and can cause significant damage to human and animal lives, electricity and communication networks, and household appliances connected to electrical lines.

The public is advised to take the following precautions as soon as dark clouds begin to appear. Since lightning may not always be visible, these precautions should not be neglected.

  • Move indoors immediately at the first sign of lightning. Remaining in open areas increases the risk of being struck.
  • Keep doors and windows closed when strong winds and lightning are expected. Avoid standing near doors and windows. Remain indoors and try to avoid contact with walls and floors as much as possible.
  • Disconnect electrical appliances from the power supply. Avoid contact with electrical equipment during thunderstorms.
  • Avoid using landline telephones during thunderstorms. Mobile phone use is safe.
  • If the sky is overcast, avoid playing in open spaces and on terraces, including for children.
  • Do not stand under trees during thunderstorms. Avoid parking vehicles beneath trees.
  • Remain inside vehicles during thunderstorms and do not extend your hands or feet outside. The interior of a vehicle offers protection during a thunderstorm. Avoid travelling on bicycles, motorcycles and tractors during thunderstorms. Seek shelter in a safe building until the lightning subsides.
  • Do not go to the terrace or courtyard to collect clothes when lightning is occurring.
