THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Although the southwest monsoon ended on a weak note, the northeast monsoon is offering hope, with low-pressure systems forming intermittently and bringing rainfall. Such systems are likely to create favourable conditions for rain in the coming weeks as well. The Bay of Bengal has emerged as a major centre for the formation of low-pressure systems. Two cyclones also formed within a week. Meteorologists expect more low-pressure systems to develop this month.
Kerala has received normal rainfall so far during the northeast monsoon. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the rainfall recorded falls within the normal category. Against the expected 340 mm, the state has received 282.9 mm, representing a deficit of just 17%. Rainfall is classified as deficient only when the shortfall exceeds 19%.
Thrissur district has recorded 21% above-normal rainfall since the northeast monsoon began. While the season has brought some relief to Kerala, Mahe continues to face a significant rainfall deficit. The deficit there stands at 94%, with only 18.4 mm of rain recorded against the normal 291.9 mm.
The active northeast monsoon has come as a major relief to the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB). Apart from raising water levels in dams, the resulting drop in temperatures and the corresponding reduction in electricity consumption will also provide relief.
There is a possibility of a power crisis if electricity consumption rises during November and December. The overall water level in KSEB dams has currently risen to 65%. The Idukki reservoir alone has 63% water storage.
Isolated parts of Kerala are likely to receive rain accompanied by thunderstorms until Sunday. Strong winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph are also expected, according to the India Meteorological Department.
A deep depression is currently located over eastern Telangana and coastal Andhra Pradesh. It is expected to move northwards and intensify further.
Meanwhile, cyclonic circulations have also developed over the Lakshadweep region and its neighbouring areas, as well as over southern Tamil Nadu. These systems are likely to increase the chances of rainfall in Kerala and other states.
