MLAs to recommend routes, final decision before 30th; KSRTC's new plan to purchase more buses

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government granted special permission for the purchase of buses for KSRTC using MLAs' Asset Development Funds, aiming to provide new vehicles and improve public transport facilities. KSRTC will allow these buses to operate on routes recommended by the respective MLAs. This initiative is expected to alleviate travel difficulties in local areas to a significant extent.

The Finance Department issued an order allowing an MLA to purchase up to three buses under the Legislative Assembly Constituency Asset Development Scheme for the 2026-27 financial year. Specifications regarding seating capacity and fuel type will be finalised in consultation with the KSRTC Chairman and Managing Director (CMD). To secure the necessary funds, the CMD must submit a statement detailing the total cost—including taxes and registration charges—by the 30th of this month. Elected representatives interested in purchasing buses must submit proposals allocating their share of funds to the District Collectors by October 15. Once funds are secured and proposals received, Collectors will grant administrative sanction within seven days, designating the CMD as the implementing officer.

• Priority will be given to the travel needs of the constituencies where these buses are allocated.
• Consultations will be held with the respective MLAs when determining bus routes and services.
• KSRTC will bear the costs for fuel, staff salaries, maintenance, and other operational expenses.
• The Corporation holds final authority regarding service categories, allocation, and redeployment.
• These buses may be deployed across any category, including Ordinary and Fast Passenger services.
