Thrissur Pooram 2024 concludes amidst controversy and political discord

THRISSUR: This year, the Thrissur Pooram concluded with crowds of Pooram enthusiasts despite the scorching heat. However, strict restrictions were imposed due to the ongoing election period, sparking controversy. For the first time in history, the fireworks, typically held at night had to be conducted during daylight hours, dampening the spirit of Pooram lovers.

The president of the Devaswom suggested that some individuals intentionally disrupted the historic Pooram. Social media is abuzz with discussions questioning whether this was a political ploy.

This time, the police enforced stringent measures not seen in years, lasting until the final moments of the fireworks after the kudamattam. There were disputes with the police leading to interruptions in the firecracker displays.

Following the completion of preparations for the Paramekkavu Fireworks, an argument ensued with the police when preparations for the Tiruvambadi began. The police insisted that only a select few personnel enter the gunpowder loading area, contrary to past practices where regular Devaswom employees and others were allowed. This led to the Thiruvambadi Devaswom turning off the lights, initially refusing to proceed with the Pooram. Eventually, after intervention from the District Collector and Minister K Rajan, an agreement was reached. However, the fireworks commenced at 7:15 in the morning.

Furthermore, several political controversies emerged. Both Devaswams featured Ramlalla in Kudamata and Sri Rama with a bow. Allegations arose claiming this was an election campaign to garner votes for the BJP. Subsequently, with the Pooram halted, another group suggested a deliberate conspiracy. Currently, there's a campaign underway linking this issue to the Sabarimala controversy.
