THRISSUR: Police have registered a case against a teacher at Varavoor Government High School in Thrissur after video footage emerged showing him repeatedly beating a Class 9 student with a stick inside a classroom.
The incident was recorded on mobile phones by other students. The teacher, Manikandan, is a native of Kanjirasherry in Mullurkara. He is alleged to have beaten the student for trying to pick up the cap of a pen that had fallen on the floor.
Cheruthuruthy police have registered a case and started an investigation. The student's parents and various organisations have demanded action against the teacher.
School authorities, however, explained that the incident was triggered after the student allegedly mocked a visually impaired teacher. The incident is reportedly from two weeks ago.
After the video emerged, the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and school authorities held a meeting and decided to take further action.
Women and Child Development Minister Bindu Krishna sought an urgent report on the incident. She directed the department secretary and the Thrissur District Child Protection Officer to conduct an inquiry and submit a report.
