V D Satheesan government completes 100 days with focus on people's needs

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government did not make grand promises, but it has begun delivering on several of the key commitments it made. As the V.D. Satheesan government completes 100 days in office today, both the government and the UDF can look back on the first phase of its tenure with some satisfaction.

There have been shortcomings, including delays in appointing personal staff, and these issues need to be addressed. However, Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan has shown firmness in both his words and actions, while the government has also managed to demonstrate its approach through concrete measures.

One of the government's first major moves was the announcement of the Priyadarshini scheme, which surprised many. The decision to provide free travel for women on KSRTC ordinary buses drew criticism, with some arguing that it would place an additional financial burden on the corporation. However, the government showed its willingness to bear the cost of the scheme. The large number of women using the service has also helped turn Priyadarshini into a politically significant initiative for the UDF.

Another decision that received praise was the move to increase the wages of ASHA workers, who had staged a 266-day protest in front of the Secretariat. The government also responded to the concerns raised by Anganwadi workers. Despite issuing a white paper highlighting the state's difficult financial situation, the government ensured that welfare pension distribution was not disrupted.

The Home Department's Operation Toofan was another major initiative during the government's first 100 days. A total of 10,015 people were arrested in 9,280 cases. Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala sought to demonstrate that the drug mafia could be brought under control if the government took firm action.

Check on price rise

Rising prices of essential commodities have always been a major concern for ordinary people. However, the government's market intervention during this Onam season was particularly effective. There was no major shortage of essential goods, while prices remained under control. The public distribution system played an important role in checking price rises. The key challenge now is whether the government can maintain this momentum in the coming months.

Indira Bhavan still without a clear leader

Even after completing 100 days, several ministers' offices are yet to become fully functional. The appointment of personal staff has also not been completed. Several constituent parties are unhappy over the delay in appointments to corporations and boards.

They have questioned the delay in making the appointments due to them. A decision to hold UDF meetings every month to ensure better coordination within the government has also not been implemented.

The state Congress, which is expected to remain the backbone of the UDF, has also shown little urgency in finding a new leader. As a result, Indira Bhavan continues to face a leadership vacuum.
