THRISSUR: A major theft happened after an elderly man was tied up and beaten in Mannuthy. The gang stole 40 sovereigns of gold ornaments and cash of Rs 50,000. The robbery was at around 3 am at the house of Somasekharan (72), who lives near Don Bosco School in Mannuthy, Thrissur. Somasekharan was the only one present in the house at the time of the theft.

Somasekharan has given a statement to the police that a three-member Hindi-speaking gang was behind the theft. They entered the house by breaking open the grills at the back of the house. Somasekharan was then tied up in the bedroom with his hands tied together. The gang also stole his chain of two and a half sovereigns and a ring of five sovereigns he was wearing. Apart from this, a total of 40 sovereigns of gold including the jewellery of his wife and daughter-in-law and Rs 50,000 kept in the house were stolen.

The statement also states that the accused brutally beat Somasekharan on his face when he tried to stop them. When the accused escaped after the theft, Somasekharan untied himself and came out and informed the locals and the Mannuthy police. Somasekharan's statement to the police said the assailants were migrants. His house is located next to the national highway. Therefore, the Mannuthy police are investigating in detail whether interstate robbery gangs operating around the national highway are behind this. Fingerprint experts and a dog squad have reached there.
