THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Union Health Ministry has confirmed that the Mpox case involving a man in Malappuram last week was from the fast-spreading clade 1b variety, marking South Asia's first recorded case from the new strain. This particular strain is known to cause severe health issues, the ministry said.

The disease was confirmed in a person who arrived from the UAE last week. Mpox is a zoonotic virus, meaning it transmits from animals to humans. It can spread through contact with an infected person. The first case of Mpox in India was detected in the 38-year-old Malappuram native. The disease can also spread through the patient's bodily fluids and objects used by the patient. The symptoms include rashes or blisters on the body, fever, headache and muscle pain. The disease can become severe in children and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Meanwhile, Kerala Health Minister Veena George announced that the health department will release updated guidelines for effective prevention and treatment of Mpox.
