NEW DELHI: Days after stepping down as the BJP's national spokesperson, Shehzad Poonawalla has submitted his resignation again, seeking to be relieved of his organisational responsibilities in the party. He submitted the resignation again after the party did not accept his earlier resignation.
Poonawalla shared on X the letter he submitted to the BJP national president. Expressing gratitude to the BJP, he said he had taken the decision to step down from his party post and membership after serious consideration. Poonawalla had first announced his decision to leave the party towards the end of July. However, his resignation was not accepted at the time. He had said that his decision was based on personal reasons.
After submitting his earlier resignation, Poonawalla removed “BJP National Spokesperson” from his bio on X and said he would remain a lifelong follower of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Poonawalla joined the BJP in late 2021 and went on to become one of the party's prominent faces and one of the leading Muslim voices within the organisation.
A lawyer by profession, Poonawalla began his political career with the Congress. He came into the spotlight in 2017 when he sought to contest against Rahul Gandhi in the Congress presidential election. He later joined the BJP. He is the brother of political analyst Tehseen Poonawalla.
