CHENNAI: A youth as he was reluctant to care of his 71-year-old ailing mother, pushed her in front of a moving train. The incident happened at Manavur Railway Station in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur. The dead identified as Padmavathi was pushed in front of a train by her son Parthasarathy (44). He pushed her before the Yelagiri Express, which does not have a stop at Manavur railway station.
Padmavathi was suffering from neurofibromatosis, a condition that causes tumors in the body. Her son had taken her to the railway station on Tuesday evening. Passengers helped her climb the steps to the platform. When the train arrived around 7 pm, he allegedly pushed her onto the tracks.
The woman died instantly after falling onto the tracks. Passengers who noticed her body and wheelchair lying in pieces alerted the authorities. Police identified Parthasarathy through CCTV footage and took him into custody by Wednesday evening.
Padmavathi’s husband was a central government employee and died in 2007. She had been dependent on a family pension of Rs 15,000 that she received after his death. Padmavathi, who had three children, was looked after by her youngest son, Parthasarathy. She had been undergoing treatment in hospital for several days and was discharged only on August 16.
