Heavy rain: Holiday declared for educational institutions in six districts on Sunday

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Amid continuing heavy rain, district authorities have declared a holiday for educational institutions in six districts of Kerala on Sunday (August 2). The holiday has been announced in Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Kannur, Kottayam and Thrissur.

Wayanad

Wayanad District Collector D.R. Meghashree has declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including madrasas, tuition centres, coaching centres, special classes and other religious study classes, on Sunday. The Collector directed the heads of residential schools and colleges to ensure the safety of students and said they may declare a holiday if required, depending on the situation. Schools and colleges functioning as relief camps will remain closed until further notice.

Kozhikode

Following the Red Alert issued in Kozhikode district, the District Collector has ordered the closure of all madrasas, Sunday schools, religious education classes, tuition centres and special coaching centres on Sunday (August 2). Offline coaching and training classes for children have also been banned, while online classes may continue. The Collector warned that strict action would be taken under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against institutions that violate the order.

Malappuram

The Malappuram District Collector, Dr Vinay Goyal, has declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including madrasas and tuition centres, on Sunday due to heavy rain and the Orange Alert issued in the district. However, the holiday will not apply to examinations that have already been scheduled.

Kannur

The District Disaster Management Authority has announced a holiday for madrasas, tuition centres and all other educational institutions that are likely to function on Sunday, as heavy rain continues in the district.

Kottayam

The Kottayam District Collector has declared a holiday for all educational institutions on Sunday after heavy rain continued across the district, water levels rose in hilly areas and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Red Alert. The holiday applies to religious study classes, tuition centres, coaching classes and special classes. Heads of residential schools and colleges have been instructed to ensure the safety of students and may grant additional leave if necessary based on the prevailing conditions.
