Low pressure over Bay of Bengal; alert issued to people in Kerala, rains to intensify again

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Heavy rains are likely to intensify in the state again from Thursday. Yellow alert has been issued in Kasaragod and Kannur today. The rains in Kerala are intensifying due to the low pressure formed over the Bay of Bengal. Rains were active in Kerala last week. There were no rain warnings after that. However, with the formation of a low pressure over the Bay of Bengal, there is a possibility of heavy rains again.

Heavy rains are defined as a situation where 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rain is received in 24 hours. As part of the black sea phenomenon, there is a possibility of sea erosion due to high waves rising to 1 to 1.6 meters on the coasts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam and Thrissur today, informed the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The warning also states that fishermen and coastal residents should be vigilant as there is a possibility of sea storms.

Alert issued

1. As the sea is likely to become rougher, stay away from the danger areas as per the instructions of the authorities.

2. Launching small boats and yachts into the sea should be avoided during this time.

3. Landing fishing vessels into the sea during periods of high waves and rough seas is just as dangerous as launching them. Therefore, launching and landing them into the sea during periods of strong waves should be avoided.

4. All activities, including beach-based tourism, should be completely avoided until the warning is lifted.

5. Fishing vessels (boats, yachts, etc.) should be safely tied up in the harbor. Maintaining a safe distance between boats can avoid the risk of collision. The safety of fishing equipment should be ensured.

6. Avoid trips to the beach and activities in the sea completely.

7. Be especially vigilant as coastal erosion is possible.
