CPM extended state committee meeting: Loyals to prepare 'Kavach' for Pinarayi, Govindan

KOZHIKODE: Moves are underway to shield Pinarayi Vijayan and State Secretary M.V. Govindan during the CPM's extended state committee meeting, which begins today. Leaders aligned with Pinarayi are trying to preempt criticism of him and Govindan by urging that discussions not focus on individuals; this conciliatory effort is being channelled through district secretaries. The leadership is also taking care to ensure that the ED case does not become a focal point for criticism against Pinarayi.

However, the faction opposed to Pinarayi intends to raise issues regarding organisational lapses and shifts in ideological policy during the meeting. The leadership is appealing against personal criticism at a time when attempts are allegedly being made to undermine the party through politically motivated agendas.

Indications suggest that matters related to the ED case may indeed come up for discussion. The opposing faction’s criticism targets the manner in which Pinarayi Vijayan and M.V. Govindan handled the issues that led to the party's electoral setbacks. They plan to leverage the changes in the party's ideological approach over the past decade as a point of contention, arguing that policy frameworks were drastically altered once absolute authority became concentrated in Pinarayi. They allege that these policy shifts were decided without informing the organisational machinery, and that State Secretary M V Govindan was complicit in the process.

The faction argues that moving forward without a change in leadership is no longer possible and that the party faces extinction if errors are not rectified. M.V. Govindan is unable to lead by effectively upholding the party's policies and stances. Should the demand for a leadership change intensify, the stance of the central leadership will prove crucial; this would effectively challenge Pinarayi Vijayan's unquestionable authority. The opposing faction criticises the unilateral decisions, working style, and "PR-driven governance" for undermining the party's foundation. They enjoy the backing of the party's central leadership, with support coming from figures such as E.P. Jayarajan, P. Rajeev, K.N. Balagopal, M.B. Rajesh, and M. Swaraj. With the exception of a few individuals like K.K. Ragesh, the Kannur faction aligns with this opposing group.
