CHERTHALA: A 21-year-old law student lost her right foot after falling between a train and the platform while getting off a train at Cherthala Railway Station on Friday night at 8 pm. Karthika Radhakrishnan, daughter of Radhakrishnan of Kadakkarappally Thareparambil, and Nisha was injured in the accident.
Karthika is presently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Ernakulam. The severed foot was found on the railway track only after Karthika was taken to the hospital. Police immediately transported it to the hospital in a police jeep. Surgeons performed an operation to reattach the foot later that night.
Karthika, an LLB student in Thiruvananthapuram, fell while getting off the Kochuveli–Mysuru Express at Cherthala. On being alerted by the passengers, the train, which had already started moving, was stopped for around 15 minutes. Cherthala police, railway police and the local residents pulled her out with great difficulty and effort. She was initially taken to a private hospital in Cherthala and later shifted to the hospital in Ernakulam.
The accident reportedly occurred when Karthika attempted to get off the train before stopping completely. Her mother and sister had arrived to pick her up from the railway station. The accident happened right in front of them.
