‘Operating Zoo in city is not ideal for animals; will be relocated to Neyyar,’ says K Muraleedharan

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister K Muraleedharan said the zoo operating in the city would be shifted to Neyyar. He said the decision to relocate the zoo was taken after consultations with everyone concerned and that it would be implemented without giving room for complaints.

He said animals are facing high levels of noise and pollution in the city and that the area around the Neyyar Dam would be the most suitable location for relocating the zoo.
‘During the previous government’s tenure, when the zoo was shifted from Thrissur to Puthur, nobody said it was a business deal? The CPM has a tendency to oppose everything. It is not right to say something is wrong when one group does it and right when another group does it,’ said Muraleedharan.

The minister said shifting the zoo would not affect the importance of the state capital. He added that the chief minister would soon announce how the land where the zoo is presently located would be utilised. There was no need for an unnecessary controversy over the matter, he added.

Minister C P John said as the zoo is operating in the city, the animals are constantly suffering from noise pollution.
