THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Jacob Thomas, DGP under suspension and senior most official of the Kerala cadre is likely to contest the Lok Sabha polls from Chalakudy. He will be contesting as a candidate of Twenty 20 Front ruling Kizhakkambalam panchayat. As government officials are banned from contesting polls, he has to resign his IPS post. His candidacy will be a tough challenge for LDF candidate Innocent and UDF candidate Benny Behnan. His anti-corruption image and the image as most powerful police officer are favourable factors for Thomas.

He had recently stated that he has never thought about entering politics before. Only public service was in his mind. Civil service was obtained after greatly desired and through it aimed social service. Political entry will be after resigning my job. While I was in service, many did not allow me to work, he said.

Thomas, a senior most IPS officer of the Kerala cadre, is under suspension from December 2017. Thomas of 1985 batch has one and a half years more in service. His first suspension was after his speech against the government in connection with Okhi cyclone relief. He was suspended again after six months for criticizing the state government in his book. He was suspended a third time in the name of some irregularities while serving as harbor director. Thomas had lodged a complaint to the centre and central administrative tribunal seeking cancellation of his suspension, but it did not find any result.
