Senior police officer caught with two Hizbul, Lashkar terrorists in Kashmir

NEW DELHI: A deputy superintendent of Jammu and Kashmir Police has been detained along with two Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Taiba militants in south Kashmir in a major counter-terror operation in the Valley.

DSP Devinder Singh was detained while he was with top Hizbul terrorist and former police officer identified as Naveed Ahmad Shah alias Naveed Babu and another Rafi Ahmed. The group was apprehended by DIG South Kashmir Atul Goyal, who was supervising the operation and caught the car at a police barricade at Mir Bazar in Kulgam of South Kashmir.

Police believe Naveed Babu to be a catch with 30 terrorists operating under him and he has also been responsible for killing over a dozen cops in the Kashmir Valley. But the complicity of a senior cop in a terror module has sent shock waves.

Sources in the security grid said that the two terrorists were riding an i10 car along when they were caught.

Sources said that the officer was under surveillance for some time. On Saturday afternoon the 4 were arrested after checkpoints were laid out as the car moved from Srinagar to Jammu.

According to officials, the police officer is alleged to have been ferrying the militants from Shopian area, possibly out of the valley.

Sources said an FIR was registered at Quazigund police station.

The accused were interrogated separately where DSP Devinder Singh claimed that he had convinced two Hizbul terrorists to surrender. While the two Hizbul terrorists made no mention of surrender, both said they were going to a camp in Jammu for two months.

The driver, Irfan, is also suspected to be a key facilitator. Sources said with weapons in the car, there is apprehension that the group was planning an attack. The role of officer Singh in the terror module is being further investigated and sources have said that with Republic Day around the corner, there is apprehension that the group could be planning to launch a terror attack.

DSP Singh is an old hand dealing in counter-terror operations since the 1990s. A resident of Tral, the Sikh officer has been at the forefront of fighting in Kashmir Valley. After the revelations about Singh along with two terrorist, raids were carried out in Tral and Singh's residence at Indranagar in Srinagar where 5 grenades and 3 AK-47 rifles were recovered.

All four were apprehended from Alstop Mirbazar Kulgam. J&K Police, however, has refused to divulge details. Sources said that investigations are in progress.
